Anette Olzon was Nightwish's singer between 2007 and 2012, and faced one of the most exposed positions in European metal: replacing Tarja Turunen after a public and widely debated rupture. Born in Sweden in 1971, she came from Alyson Avenue, a melodic hard rock band, and was working as a nurse when she was chosen from among hundreds of candidates. Her voice is the exact opposite of her predecessor's: instead of the operatically trained soprano, a rock and pop timbre, lighter, closer to song than to aria. It was no accident — the band deliberately sought another direction, and Dark Passion Play (2007) and Imaginaerum (2011) were written for that voice. The comparison, however, was unavoidable, and much of the audience made it mercilessly. Olzon has spoken publicly about the weight of that over the years. She left the band abruptly in October 2012, mid-tour in the United States, after falling ill during the shows. She went on to projects of her own, among them The Dark Element with Jani Liimatainen, and the Allen/Olzon partnership with Russell Allen of Symphony X.
