Bas Maas — Dutch guitarist — was part of After Forever in the band's final phase, taking on rhythm guitar and clean vocals. That double function is significant in the group's format. After Forever built its effect on contrasting vocal layers: Floor Jansen's lyric soprano, Sander Gommans's growls and clean male backing voices, over written orchestrations. Having a guitarist who also sings clean widens that device without depending on studio guests — and makes it reproducible live. He was on Remagine (2005) and After Forever (2007), the group's last work, made when the band had already established itself as one of the references of European symphonic metal, alongside Epica and Nightwish. After Forever ceased activity in 2009. Maas belongs to the mature line-up, the one performing the band's most elaborate repertoire — with subject matter that abandoned fantasy in favour of religion, science and social criticism, and arrangements demanding more than one function of each member.
