Chris Fehn — number 3 — was Slipknot's percussionist and backing vocalist between 1998 and 2019, present through almost the entire phase that consolidated the band. Born in 1973, he joined shortly before the debut album and stayed for more than twenty years. His function existed as a pair with Shawn Crahan's. Slipknot is one of the rare heavy bands with two percussionists besides the drummer, and what they produce is not conventional rhythmic accompaniment: they are layers of struck metal, barrels and improvised objects laid over the drums, creating the group's characteristic industrial texture. Live, those two posts are also the most physically violent on stage. He left in 2019 in litigious circumstances. Fehn sued the band alleging unequal distribution of profits among members, and was dismissed shortly after — an unusual episode in a group that always presented itself as an indivisible collective, and one that publicly exposed the difference between the image of nine equals and the actual corporate structure. He is on the albums of 1999, 2001, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2019.
