Dan Swanö — Swedish musician and producer — is one of Scandinavian metal's most versatile figures, working as composer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and sound engineer. His importance comes from two directions. As a musician he fronted Edge of Sanity, the band that in the 1990s mixed death metal with progressive structures — Crimson (1996) is a single forty-minute track, in a genre that until then worked with three-minute songs. As a producer, his studio processed dozens of Swedish death metal records, and his sonic signature is recognisable across much of what came out of the region in that period. Swanö sings both guttural and clean, with pitch and control most extreme metal vocalists lack — which let him move between death metal, doom, progressive and melodic projects without sounding out of place in any of them. That breadth is rare. There are extreme metal musicians with technique, and there are producers with good ears; few combine the two at the same level, and fewer still with the productivity Swanö has sustained for three decades.
