Gus Monsanto — Brazilian vocalist — was the voice of Revolution Renaissance, the project created by Timo Tolkki after leaving Stratovarius. The situation was delicate. Tolkki had been the composer and guitarist of Stratovarius's classic phase, one of European power metal's most important bands, and left the group in 2008 amid public conflict. Revolution Renaissance was his answer — a new band, with its own material, to prove the authorship was his. New Era (2008), the debut, featured weighty guest vocalists. From Age of Aquarius (2009) and Trinity (2010) onwards, Monsanto took the vocals permanently. Taking the microphone in a project like that means singing material written by a composer whose earlier work the genre's audience knows note for note — an inevitable and permanent comparison. It is also a notable case of a Brazilian in the European power metal circuit: a national singer fronting a Finnish band led by one of the genre's central figures.
