Jeroen Goossens is a Dutch multi-instrumentalist specialising in flutes and wind instruments, and a recurrent collaborator of Ayreon. His presence is one of the elements that give Arjen Lucassen's project a sonic palette almost no metal band possesses. Besides the concert flute he plays wooden flutes, wind instruments of folk tradition and pieces in unusual registers, creating the acoustic textures that appear between the heavy sections of the concept albums. That alternation is structural, not decorative. Ayreon's rock operas narrate stories with multiple characters and settings, and the change of instrumentation is what signals the move from one scene to the next — a flute indicates a narrative territory different from the one marked by distorted guitars. Without those contrasts the records would lose the clarity of their dramatic structure. He also works on recordings by other artists and in classical and experimental music contexts.
