John Vihervä — Finnish bassist — was part of Stratovarius in the band's early phase, before its international recognition. Stratovarius spent nearly a decade in Helsinki producing material of limited circulation before becoming one of European power metal's reference bands. Fright Night (1989), Twilight Time (1992) and Dreamspace (1994) document that formative period, in which the group was still searching for the identity later records would settle. That phase is little discussed, and stands on its own. At the time Finland had no internationally relevant metal scene and no label structure for the genre — everything that came later, including the country becoming the world's densest in metal bands per capita, was built on that earlier work. Recognition arrived with Episode (1996) and Visions (1997), by which time Vihervä had already left the group. It is the pattern of someone who takes part in the building without being present at the harvest.
