Jørn Viggo Lofstad — Norwegian guitarist — is known for his work in Pagan's Mind, the progressive metal band formed in Skien in the 1990s. Pagan's Mind holds an uncommon position in Norwegian music. While the country was internationally identified with black metal, the band developed a progressive metal of clean production, science-fiction subject matter and complex structures — closer to Dream Theater and Symphony X than to anything in the local scene. Lofstad's guitar is a central element of that design. The repertoire demands riffs in irregular metres, constructed harmonies and long solos, executed live with studio precision. It is a vocabulary requiring years of study and rarely learned by ear. The band built an international audience without fitting any of the categories Norway is associated with — which also explains why its reputation circulates more among progressive metal listeners than in the general audience for Scandinavian metal.
