Lando van Gils

Lando van Gils — Dutch keyboardist — held After Forever's keyboards in the period between the debut and the band's mature line-up. The orchestration work on Decipher (2001), the second record, is his — the one on which the group left behind the still-tentative format of Prison of Desire and fully took on the contrast that would become its mark: lyric soprano on one side, Sander Gommans's guttural vocals on the other, with written choir and strings binding the two. Decipher is the record that established After Forever as a reference of Dutch symphonic metal, alongside Within Temptation and the then-nascent Epica. He left before Invisible Circles (2004) and was succeeded by Joost van den Broek. The keyboard chair was the band's most rotating position, which makes sense: it is the instrument carrying most of the orchestral writing load in this genre.
