Luuk van Gerven — Dutch bassist — was After Forever's bassist throughout the band's existence, from the mid-1990s to the close in 2009. He is one of only two musicians, alongside drummer André Borgman, present on every one of the group's records: Prison of Desire (2000), Decipher (2001), Invisible Circles (2004), Remagine (2005) and After Forever (2007). The bass's role in this repertoire supports in two directions at once. It must follow low-tuned guitars and at the same time not collide with the layers of written orchestration and choir — often it is the bass that preserves harmonic legibility when everything else is occupied. Van Gerven went through Mark Jansen's departure to Epica in 2002, the thematic turn of Invisible Circles and every keyboard and guitar change without interruption. He is the kind of musician whose importance only becomes visible when you look at the band's whole timeline.
