Mandy Meyer — Swiss guitarist — has one of the most varied paths in European rock, with spells in Krokus, Asia, Gotthard and Unisonic. These are quite different musical contexts. Krokus is Swiss hard rock in the AC/DC lineage; Asia, progressive rock in radio format assembled by veterans of Yes and King Crimson; Gotthard, melodic hard rock that became the most commercially successful band in Swiss history; Unisonic, a German melodic metal project with Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen, both formerly of Helloween. Moving through those worlds demands real adaptation. The guitar vocabulary of 1980s hard rock is not that of progressive rock, and neither is to be confused with German melodic power metal of the 2010s. Meyer built a career precisely on that capacity: being the guitarist an established band calls when it needs someone who understands the material without needing to reinvent it. It is a competence rarer than virtuosity, and harder to demonstrate.
