Oliver Holzwarth is a German bassist who was part of Rhapsody of Fire and one of the most sought-after session players in European metal. He is the brother of Alex Holzwarth, the band's drummer between 2000 and 2016, and the two worked together in several contexts — an unusual combination, since bass and drums form the rhythm section and a familiarity of that order produces a synchrony hard to obtain otherwise. His best-known work lies outside Rhapsody: he was Blind Guardian's studio bassist for several albums, including the period in which Hansi Kürsch gave up the instrument to concentrate on vocals. He also passed through Sieges Even, the German progressive metal band, alongside his brother. That résumé explains his function: dense repertoires, with layered arrangements and frequent changes of metre, demand a bassist able to read structure before improvising — and it is that competence that keeps him circulating among projects of high technical demand.
