Artist

Sami Vänskä

Sami Vänskä — Finnish bassist — was Nightwish's bassist between 1998 and 2001, the period in which the band emerged from obscurity and became an international reference. The bass on Oceanborn (1998) and Wishmaster (2000) is his — the two records that defined symphonic metal as a genre. Oceanborn especially is the album on which the formula became clear: lyric soprano over fast metal, with keyboard orchestrations and song structure — something that sounded unprecedented in 1998 and would become the model for dozens of European bands. The bass in this format has a barely visible and technically demanding function: it must give weight beneath keyboard layers that already occupy much of the spectrum, without competing with the voice or muddying the orchestration. It is work of precision and restraint. Vänskä left Nightwish in 2001, shortly before Century Child. His departure came at the exact moment the band was beginning to reach global scale — which makes him one of those figures whose contribution is recorded on the albums but not in the recognition that followed.
