Sid Wilson — number 0 — has been Slipknot's DJ since 1998, and holds the most improbable position in a metal band: turntables, in an ensemble where nine people already produce sound at once. His function is not that of hip-hop, where the instrument comes from. Wilson uses the turntables as a source of noise and texture — scratches, deformed samples, electronic layers piling up over the guitars — and the effect is industrial, not rhythmic. It is part of what makes Slipknot sound like a machine rather than a band, and also one of the elements that kept the group from being absorbed into the nu metal it was labelled with. Live, he is the element of physical risk. Wilson became known for leaping from stage structures, climbing scaffolding and throwing himself onto the crowd, a practice that has cost him fractures and which he has kept up for decades. He also maintains electronic work of his own, under the name DJ Starscream, on ground far removed from metal. Alongside Corey Taylor, Shawn Crahan and Mick Thomson, he is one of the remaining members of the original line-up.
