Staffan Stråhlman — Swedish guitarist — works in the metal and hard rock circuit of Scandinavia. Over four decades Sweden developed one of the world's most productive heavy rock scenes, and the explanation is not merely cultural. Since the 1940s the country has maintained a system of municipal music schools — the kulturskolan — offering instrumental lessons at token prices to children and teenagers, alongside subsidised rehearsal rooms in practically every town. The cumulative effect of that policy is measurable. Sweden produces technically well-trained musicians in numbers out of proportion to its population, and heavy rock benefited from it as much as pop did — pop having become the country's largest music export industry. Guitarists formed in that environment usually have knowledge of harmony and score reading, which makes them able to work in varied contexts. It is a structural advantage the Swedish scene holds over practically every other.
