Tom Hess is an American guitarist who worked with Rhapsody of Fire in studio and performance roles, and is known above all as a guitar teacher. His link to the band arises in a specific context: Rhapsody's records are built in layers, with overlaid rhythm guitars, harmonies in several voices and doubled lines, and reproducing that material requires more players than the nominal line-up holds. The repertoire imposes a high technical demand. Luca Turilli's compositions combine neoclassical phrasing at elevated speed with harmonic progressions of classical descent, which requires command of modal scales, arpeggios and precise articulation — territory closer to formal study of the instrument than to the blues tradition underpinning much of rock. It is at that point that his work as a teacher connects to his work as a player: he built a career developing a teaching method aimed precisely at that kind of technical repertoire.
