Torsten Stenzel — German producer, keyboardist and programmer — is Tarja Turunen's partner in Outlanders, the project combining ambient electronic music with a lyric voice. His origin is electronic music, not metal. Stenzel built a career producing trance and electronic dance music in Germany and the Canary Islands, a field with completely different working methods: composition done in software, textures built from programmed layers, no band in the conventional sense. Outlanders proceeds precisely from that crossing. Tarja is a classically trained soprano who became known as the singer of Nightwish, the band that defined symphonic metal; placing that voice over ambient electronic beds produces something belonging to neither territory of origin. It is a kind of collaboration that has only recently become common, as artists with established paths began using side projects to work outside what their main audience expects.
