Tuomo Lassila

Tuomo Lassila — Finnish drummer — was Stratovarius's drummer through the band's first decade, the period in which Finnish power metal was built from nothing. Stratovarius began in Helsinki in the 1980s playing a still-raw metal, far from the orchestral precision it would become known for. Lassila was there for that phase and followed the transformation: Fright Night (1989), Twilight Time (1992), Dreamspace (1994) and Fourth Dimension (1995) document a band gradually finding its identity — and, with it, defining what Scandinavian power metal would be. That evolution has consequences for the drums. The early material still followed traditional heavy metal; the 1990s material demanded constant speed, double bass and metrical precision sustained across long songs. It is a change of technical vocabulary within the same band. Lassila left in the mid-1990s, shortly before Episode (1996) and Visions (1997), the records that would carry Stratovarius worldwide. The ground on which those albums were built, however, comes from the preceding decade.
