HDK — short for "Hate, Death, Kill" — is the metal project of Dutch guitarist, vocalist and composer Sander Gommans, best known as a founding member and principal songwriter of the symphonic metal band After Forever. Gommans started HDK in 2005 as a side outlet for material far heavier and more aggressive than After Forever's symphonic style. Progress stalled amid health problems; After Forever's 2009 split finally freed Gommans to complete HDK's debut. HDK's defining trait is its collaborative, studio-based format: rather than a touring band, Gommans writes and records the foundations himself and invites guest musicians to add their parts remotely. The debut, System Overload, appeared in February 2009 via Season of Mist, with all lyrics by Amanda Somerville and guests including André Matos and Arjen Anthony Lucassen. A second album, Serenades of the Netherworld, followed in 2014, built around a more settled cast. Vocalist Geert Kroes died in September 2022, aged 42.
