Jaap Melman — Dutch bassist — was part of ReVamp, the band led by Floor Jansen between 2009 and 2016. ReVamp was the project in which Jansen, after ten years in After Forever, fully took over authorship of her own material. The result is heavier and less ornamented than the symphonic metal she had become known for: guitars up front, raw production and personal subject matter, especially on Wild Card (2013), a record largely written during a period of personal difficulty she made public. In this context the bass works closer to modern metal than to the symphonic tradition. It must give weight and definition in the low register, with low tunings and clear articulation, to support riffs that carry the structure without orchestral backing. The band ended in 2016, when Jansen became the permanent singer of Nightwish — the biggest symphonic metal band in the world. ReVamp's two records remain the most personal part of her discography.
