Juha Lanu — Finnish guitarist — is part of Tarja Turunen's band, accompanying the singer across her solo career. Playing guitar in this repertoire requires a breadth few contexts in metal ask for. Tarja's solo work runs from the heavy symphonic metal of The Shadow Self (2016) and In the Raw (2019) to records of song with orchestra, classical repertoire and Christmas albums. Within a single show the guitar may have to hold heavy riffs and then withdraw to discreet accompaniment beneath a lyric voice. That is the central difference between Tarja's career and her Nightwish phase. There the format was fixed; here she built a body of work that moves between genres, and the band has to follow every shift. Tarja is one of European metal's best-known voices and has kept an active career for nearly twenty years since leaving Nightwish. The musicians accompanying her through that period form a stable core, which is rare in a solo artist's backing band.
