Tarja Turunen is a Finnish soprano whose solo career has been built on a rare double foundation: formal classical training — conservatory study in Kuopio and later at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe — and two decades of experience fronting arena-scale metal. Her 2005 dismissal from Nightwish, delivered publicly in an open letter after the band's Helsinki show, ended that chapter abruptly; rather than retreat, she used it as the starting point of an independent career that has now outlasted her tenure in the band. She began quietly, with the Finnish-language Christmas record Henkäys ikuisuudesta (2006), before the true solo debut My Winter Storm arrived in 2007. Grandiose and cinematic, mixing gothic rock, orchestral arrangement and industrial edge, it went platinum in Finland and charted across Europe, with "I Walk Alone" becoming her signature solo song. What Lies Beneath (2010) pushed harder into metal and marked the first album on which she took composing credit on every track, bringing in guests such as Joe Satriani and Phil Labonte. Colours in the Dark (2013) was more expansive and experimental, layering world-music textures and a wider emotional palette over symphonic rock. Running in parallel is a body of work showcasing her classical formation. Ave Maria – En Plein Air (2015), recorded in a Finnish church with organ, harp and cello, gathers eight settings of the Ave Maria alongside her own composition. From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas) (2017) reimagined carols as haunted, minor-key laments, and Dark Christmas (2023) continued that seasonal-but-shadowed line. Between these, The Shadow Self (2016) — preceded by the companion EP The Brightest Void — and In the Raw (2019) delivered her heaviest, most collaborative rock statements, featuring Alissa White-Gluz, Cristina Scabbia, Björn "Speed" Strid and Tommy Karevik. Best of: Living the Dream (2022) consolidated fifteen years of solo output. Live performance is central to her identity, documented across Act 1, Act II, Luna Park Ride and the Rocking Heels series — Live at Metal Church, drawn from an intimate 300-person show at Wacken's church, and later Live at Hellfest — which reframe metal and rock covers through her operatic instrument. She has collaborated widely: with Mike Terrana, Within Temptation, Schiller, Apocalyptica, Marko Hietala, Doro, the electronic project Outlanders with Torsten Stenzel, and Harus. In 2026 she released Frisson Noir, her tenth solo studio album and her declared heaviest, with guests including Dani Filth, Apocalyptica, Marko Hietala and Chad Smith, followed by the International Frisson Live Tour. Twenty years on, she stands as a fully established solo artist rather than an ex-member — a headliner of symphonic metal festivals who moves freely between metal stages, orchestral halls and Christmas concerts.
