Mirka Rantanen — Finnish drummer — is one of the most sought-after musicians in Finland's melodic metal circuit, with spells in Thunderstone, Kotipelto and various projects in the field. From the 1990s onwards Finland produced an uncommon concentration of power metal bands and a network of musicians circulating among them frequently. Rantanen is central to that network: drummers able to execute the genre's vocabulary — sustained double bass, metrical precision at high tempos, physical endurance for long songs — and to do it with studio consistency are sought by several projects at once. This is a specific kind of career. Instead of building a reputation inside a single band, the musician builds a reputation as a dependable performer and is called upon precisely for that. It is less visible to the public, but it sustains much of the genre's output. The Finnish circuit has characteristics of its own: bands with overlapping line-ups, production concentrated in a few studios and a high average technical level — the result of an accessible music education system, unusual for metal.
