Kotipelto is the solo project of Finnish vocalist Timo Kotipelto, best known as the frontman of power metal institution Stratovarius. He launched the project in 2001–2002 during a hiatus in Stratovarius activity, partly to keep working and partly to have a vehicle he fully controlled, writing all the music and lyrics himself. Musically the project stayed close to melodic Euro-power metal, but the lyrical world was distinctly his own, built around ancient Egypt. The debut, Waiting for the Dawn (2002), was recorded at Finnvox Studios with an all-star cast including Michael Romeo, Roland Grapow, Janne Wirman and Mikko Härkin, with cover art by Iron Maiden's Derek Riggs. Coldness (2004) continued the Egyptian thread. The third and final album, Serenity (2007), reached #8 on the Finnish chart. The project has been on hold since 2008, when Stratovarius resumed full activity. In parallel, Kotipelto has performed as an acoustic duo with Jani Liimatainen, producing the album Blackoustic (2012).
