Sabine Edelsbacher

Sabine Edelsbacher — Austrian vocalist — is the voice of Edenbridge, the symphonic metal band she co-founded in 1998. Edenbridge emerged at the same moment Nightwish, Within Temptation and After Forever were defining the genre, and built a body of work parallel to those names with a profile of its own: less emphasis on speed, more room for written orchestration and a vocal approach avoiding the operatic extreme in favour of a more direct register. That choice matters. The classically trained lyric soprano became almost obligatory in European symphonic metal, and Edelsbacher works elsewhere: a clear, well-pitched, melodically centred voice, without the heavy vibrato of art singing. The result is a sound closer to song than to opera. Edenbridge now spans more than two decades and a dozen records, with a stable line-up around Edelsbacher and guitarist-composer Lanvall. It is one of the few bands in the genre whose singer has remained the same since the founding — in a subgenre marked by frequent changes in that position.
