Angra

Founded in São Paulo, in 1991, by Andre Matos and Rafael Bittencourt, Angra emerged with the proposal to combine heavy metal, classical music, Brazilian rhythms and European virtuosity without diluting its origins. The consolidated lineup with Kiko Loureiro, Luís Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori debuted on *Angels Cry* (1993), an album that projected the band in Japan and Europe with tracks such as “Carry On”, “Time” and “Make Believe”. Three years later, *Holy Land* deepened this identity by incorporating Brazilian percussions, historical references and symphonic arrangements into a conceptual work on the formation of Brazil. With “Nothing to Say”, “Carolina IV” and the title track, the group stopped following the European model and started to present its own language. After the more direct *Fireworks* (1998), internal conflicts led to the departure of Andre Matos, Luís Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori. The reconstruction came with Edu Falaschi, Felipe Andreoli and Aquiles Priester in *Rebirth* (2001), which recovered the public with “Nova Era”, “Acid Rain” and “Running Alone”. The formation reached its artistic peak in *Temple of Shadows* (2004), a conceptual and progressive work that brought together technique, weight and emotion in tracks such as “Spread Your Fire”, “Waiting Silence” and “Late Redemption”. After *Aurora Consurgens* and *Aqua*, Falaschi's departure began a new phase with Fabio Lione, responsible for vocals on *Secret Garden*, *Ømni* and *Cycles of Pain*. During this period, Bruno Valverde took over the drums and Marcelo Barbosa replaced Kiko Loureiro, leading the band to a heavier and more progressive sound. In 2026, Alírio Netto took over the vocals after Lione's departure, opening another chapter in a trajectory marked by ruptures and reconstructions. Throughout different formations, Angra preserved an identity that never depended exclusively on one member. Its importance lies in the ability to insert Brazilian elements into melodic metal without resorting to caricature and demonstrating that the country could also export sophistication, melody and personality. More than a central name in national power metal, Angra has become one of the Brazilian bands with the greatest reach and international relevance.
