Martijn Spierenburg was Within Temptation's keyboardist between 2001 and 2024, and the person responsible for one of the most decisive layers of the band's sound. Born in the Netherlands in 1975, he joined precisely as the group was abandoning the gothic doom of its early years and adopting full symphonic arrangement. His function went far beyond playing keyboards: it fell to him to build the orchestrations, the choirs and the string layers that give Mother Earth (2000), The Silent Force (2004) and The Heart of Everything (2007) the almost cinematic scale that defined symphonic metal as a genre. It is structural, barely visible work. In an arrangement where voice, guitar and orchestra contest space, the keyboard's function is to create the sonic environment in which everything else happens — and taken away, Within Temptation's repertoire would lose precisely what distinguishes it. He also followed the later changes of direction, from The Unforgiving (2011) to Bleed Out (2023), when the band moved towards modern rock and electronic layers began to replace part of the orchestration. He left the group in 2024, after twenty-three years.
