Kevin Moore was Dream Theater's keyboardist between 1986 and 1994, and his departure remains one of the most discussed subjects among the band's audience. Born in 1967, he was part of the original line-up alongside John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy, and recorded When Dream and Day Unite (1989), Images and Words (1992) and Awake (1994). His contribution was opposite in nature to what the group would later develop. While Dream Theater was moving towards virtuosity as its central value, Moore worked with atmosphere, texture and restraint — his keyboards create space rather than filling it, and the most introspective passages of the first three albums are his. He also wrote significant lyrics in the repertoire, among them "Wait for Sleep" and "Space-Dye Vest". That last one is the record of his farewell. Moore announced his departure during the Awake sessions, and the track — slow, without a solo, built on samples and piano — closes the album with something Dream Theater would never attempt again. Afterwards he withdrew entirely from the metal circuit. He carried on with the project Chroma Key, was part of OSI alongside Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, and turned to composing for film, living outside the United States. He never returned to the band, nor took part in its reunions.
