Lamb of God are an American groove metal band from Richmond, Virginia, and one of the defining acts of modern heavy metal. The group was formed in 1994 by bassist John Campbell, guitarist Mark Morton and drummer Chris Adler under the name Burn the Priest. Vocalist Randy Blythe joined in 1995. The members renamed themselves Lamb of God in 1999, and Willie Adler joined on second guitar. New American Gospel (2000) and As the Palaces Burn (2003) fused thrash precision with Southern-tinged groove riffing. Lamb of God became a central pillar of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. Ashes of the Wake (2004) was a commercial breakthrough and genre landmark; Sacrament (2006) reached the Billboard top five and Wrath (2009) debuted at number two. In June 2012 Blythe was arrested in Prague and charged with manslaughter over a fan's death; he voluntarily returned to stand trial and was acquitted in March 2013. Chris Adler exited in 2019, replaced by Art Cruz. That lineup recorded Lamb of God (2020), Omens (2022) and Into Oblivion (2026).
