Alex Shelnutt — American drummer — has been part of A Day to Remember since the mid-2000s, and is the only occupant of the position through practically the band's entire relevant history. His function is the most exposed in the group's formula. A Day to Remember alternates pop punk and metalcore within the same song, and it is the drums that perform the passage: from a light tempo with off-beat marking to a breakdown of extreme weight, without preparation. If the transition is not exact, the seam shows and the song sounds like two pieces glued together. That alternation demands, in practice, two distinct rhythmic vocabularies — pop punk's, which favours speed and lightness, and metalcore's, which works with heavy syncopation and space between strokes. Shelnutt performs both in sequence, several times per track, and has for almost twenty years. He recorded Homesick (2009), What Separates Me from You (2010), Common Courtesy (2013), Bad Vibrations (2016) and You're Welcome (2021), crossing the band's rise to the mainstream and the legal dispute with its label that almost interrupted its career.
