Thomen Stauch — born in Germany in 1970 — was the drummer of Blind Guardian's classic line-up, a member from the founding in 1987 until 2005. His spell covers the albums that established the band: Battalions of Fear (1988), Somewhere Far Beyond (1992), Imaginations from the Other Side (1995), Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998) and A Night at the Opera (2002). That is the whole construction of the group's identity, from the German speed metal of the early years to the narrative, orchestral format of the turn of the 2000s. His style is fast and direct, with constant double kick — the rhythmic base European power metal would adopt as standard. But his hardest contribution is on the later records: when the arrangements came to involve choirs of dozens of layers, frequent changes of metre and acoustic passages, the drums had to hold up structures that no longer followed verse-and-chorus logic. He left in 2005 and founded Savage Circus, a project in which he returned to the more direct power metal of Blind Guardian's early phase.
