Mike Portnoy

Mike Portnoy is Dream Theater's founding drummer, a member from 1985 to 2010 and again since 2023. Born in Long Beach, New York, in 1967, he assembled the band with John Petrucci and John Myung while the three were students at Berklee, and for twenty-five years he was more than the drummer: he was the producer, the organiser and the group's public voice. His playing is recognisable from a distance. The enormous kit, with two bass drums and a wall of cymbals, allows attacks most drummers simply cannot reproduce, but the decisive trait is another: Portnoy thinks of drums as narrative. In twenty-minute tracks with ten different sections, it is he who marks where one part ends and another begins, and that is why Dream Theater's music holds together despite its complexity. He also wrote the "Twelve-step Suite", five songs spread across five albums over a decade, dealing openly with his recovery from alcoholism — a rare project in metal for taking on fragility in the first person. He left in 2010, having asked for a break the others refused, in a public and painful rupture. He spent the following decade in Transatlantic, Flying Colors, Sons of Apollo and The Winery Dogs, and returned to Dream Theater in October 2023, in place of Mike Mangini, recording Parasomnia (2025).
