Brent Smedley — born in the United States in 1971 — was Iced Earth's drummer across several periods between the 1990s and the 2010s, which makes him the instrumentalist who held the role most often in the band's history. His task is defined by Jon Schaffer's vocabulary. Iced Earth's riffs are built on patterns of triplets in fast, repetitive picking — the so-called galloping figure — and the drums must reinforce that pattern without overlaying it. That requires kick drum marking aligned exactly to the guitarist's right hand, sustained across whole tracks. It is work of synchrony more than of invention. At the same time, the repertoire includes concept albums with changes of tempo and dramatic passages, where the drums must signal narrative transitions — a function distinct from the previous one and performed within the same song. He was in the band around Burnt Offerings (1995), returned in later periods and took part in Dystopia (2011) and the output that followed, being one of the elements of continuity in a group marked by frequent line-up changes.
