Christoph Schneider — born in East Berlin on 11 May 1966 — has been Rammstein's drummer since the founding in 1994, and comes from the same Berlin music scene as the others, having played before in bands such as Die Firma. His work is what physically defines the group's sound. Rammstein's drumming is deliberately rigid: little variation, short and rare fills, kick drum hammering repetitive and absolutely exact patterns. It is a style that gives up everything normally prized in a rock drummer — swing, improvisation, individual presence — in favour of a precision that sounds programmed. That choice is not a limitation, it is the core of the project. Since the guitars already work by repetition and the singing is declaimed in blocks, it is the drums that decide whether the result will sound like a band or like a machine; Rammstein always wanted to sound like a machine. He is one of the six original members who never left the group — a line-up unchanged since 1994, a situation practically without parallel among bands of comparable size.
