Danny Herrera — born in the United States in 1970 — has been Napalm Death's drummer since 1991, when he replaced Mick Harris. Taking that seat meant inheriting a technique associated with a single person: Harris had coined the term blast beat and turned the device into the rhythmic base of grindcore. Herrera kept that language and developed it, taking in dynamic variation and more elaborate patterns as the band expanded its repertoire beyond pure speed. He is on all the group's output since Utopia Banished (1992), which makes him the drummer of most of the discography — and the one who holds up the band's most distinct phases: the return to grindcore in the 1990s, the industrial experimentation of Diatribes (1996) and Inside the Torn Apart (1997), and the recent material, which combines extreme aggression with almost experimental passages. Alongside Shane Embury he forms the stable core that gives continuity to a group that no longer has any founding member.
