David Silveria — born in the United States in 1972 — was the drummer of Korn's classic line-up, present from 1993 to 2006. His contribution is one of the reasons Korn does not sound like the metal bands that came before it. Silveria does not play in the language of thrash or traditional heavy metal: his patterns come from funk and hip-hop, with emphasis on groove, use of empty space and displaced accents. That is what gives the band's songs the swing the genre would inherit — nu metal is, above all, metal with groove. That logic combines with the percussive function of Fieldy's bass and with the seven-string guitars that abandon melody. The result is a band in which the rhythm section occupies the foreground and the guitars work as texture, inverting metal's usual hierarchy. He recorded the albums that defined the group: Korn (1994), Life Is Peachy (1996), Follow the Leader (1998), Issues (1999) and Untouchables (2002). He left in 2006 and spent the following years in disputes with the other members over rights and participation in the band.
