Ed Warby — born in the Netherlands in 1968 — is Ayreon's most recurrent drummer, present on most of the project's albums since the late 1990s. His function is particular. Ayreon has no fixed line-up: each album is a rock opera with dozens of guest singers playing characters, and the instrumentation is largely recorded by Arjen Lucassen himself. Drums are one of the few functions he delegates, and Warby is the one who performs it regularly — which makes him, in practice, the project's second most constant element. The repertoire demands versatility. A single record can move from acoustic and folk passages to progressive metal sections in irregular metre and to stretches of death metal, depending on which character is on stage. The drums must follow those changes of register within a single track. His career outside Ayreon covers equally distant extremes: he was the drummer of Gorefest, a pioneering Dutch death metal band, and belonged to Hail of Bullets and The Gathering, besides his own projects.
