Henrik Klingenberg — born in Finland in 1978 — has been Sonata Arctica's keyboard player since 2003, and is the band's most visible instrumentalist after Tony Kakko. His entry coincides with Reckoning Night (2004), the record that consolidated Sonata Arctica in the international circuit. He has since taken part in the whole output, including the stylistic turn of Unia (2007) — the moment when the band abandoned fast power metal for slower, harmonically complex material, a change that demanded a different role of the keyboard. That transformation defines his contribution. In power metal, the keyboard doubles the guitar and plays solos at speed; in the later repertoire it came to build textures, ambiguous harmonies and acoustic piano passages that hold up the structure of the tracks rather than ornament them. Klingenberg crossed both regimes within the same band. Live, he is a prominent figure: he plays standing, with keyboards mounted on stands allowing movement, and takes up stage space unusual for the instrument. He also keeps work outside Sonata Arctica, playing in other projects of the Finnish circuit.
