Jason Rullo is Symphony X's founding drummer, present since 1994 with a single absence, between 1998 and 2000. Born in 1972, he is the one responsible for keeping organised a music that, on paper, resists organisation. The band's repertoire is built on Michael Romeo's compositions, which change metre frequently, chain together sections of opposite character and sustain twenty-minute tracks. It falls to the drummer to make that audible: to mark where a part ends, give weight where the orchestration asks for weight, and pull back when guitar and keyboard contest the foreground. Rullo does this with double-kick technique and a sense of dynamics that comes from jazz, which keeps the drums from sounding like a metronome in music this calculated. He was away for two years in the late 1990s — Thomas Walling took over on Twilight in Olympus (1998) — and returned in time to record V: The New Mythology Suite (2000), staying ever since. He is on The Divine Wings of Tragedy (1997), The Odyssey (2002), Paradise Lost (2007), Iconoclast (2011) and Underworld (2015), alongside Romeo, Michael Pinnella, Russell Allen and Michael LePond — one of the most stable line-ups in American progressive metal.
