Klaus Sperling

Klaus Sperling was the drummer of Primal Fear's early phase, present from the band's formation in 1997. Born in Germany in 1969, he was part of the group assembled by Ralf Scheepers and Mat Sinner and played on the records that established its name in the genre. He was on Primal Fear (1998), Jaws of Death (1999), Nuclear Fire (2001), Black Sun (2002) and Devil's Ground (2004) — the arc running from the raw debut to the album on which the band was already operating with full production and international recognition. His role defined the rhythmic pattern Primal Fear has kept ever since. The group's repertoire rests on continuous double kick at high tempo, sustained across whole tracks without relief, with short fills and firm marking in the choruses. It is a kind of writing that demands physical endurance before it demands invention, and it is the base on which the harmonised guitars and Scheepers's high register can operate. He left the band in the mid-2000s, closing the first phase of its history.
