Louie Clemente

Louie Clemente — born in the United States in 1965 — was the drummer of Testament's classic line-up, from the founding until 1992. He recorded the first five albums: The Legacy (1987), The New Order (1988), Practice What You Preach (1989), Souls of Black (1990) and The Ritual (1992). These are the records that placed Testament among the central names of Bay Area thrash, alongside Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Exodus — a scene that defined the genre and whose reach no other region of American metal matched in the 1980s. His drumming belongs to that school: constant speed on double kick, short fills and a dry attack, a format that served as the engine for Eric Peterson's riffs and Alex Skolnick's melodic solos. It is an approach of precision, not display — in the thrash of the time, the drums held up the structure rather than competing for space. He left in 1992, in the same period when Skolnick and bassist Greg Christian also departed, closing the line-up that Testament would only partly reconstitute more than a decade later.
