Marius van Pyreen

Marius van Pyreen — Dutch musician — works in projects on the metal circuit of the Netherlands. The Netherlands hold a disproportionate position in European metal, and not by chance. Since the 1980s the country has maintained a public policy of music support including subsidised rehearsal spaces, municipally funded venues and an accessible music school system — conditions rarely found elsewhere, which produce musicians with a solid technical base from an early age. The effect on metal was specific: the country became the centre of European symphonic metal, with Within Temptation, Epica and After Forever defining the genre from a territory smaller than many Brazilian states. Musicians working in that circuit tend to be active in several projects, taking advantage of the density of connections and geographic proximity. It is a career model built on circulation rather than exclusivity.
