Morgan Berthet — French drummer — is part of Myrath, the Tunisian band that became the leading name in metal from the Arab world. Drumming in Myrath carries a demand that does not arise in other progressive metal bands: it must converse with the rhythmic patterns of Maghrebi music. Many of them do not follow rock's standard four-beat metre, and the traditional percussion the band uses has timbres and accents of its own. The work consists of integrating that into metal drumming without either running the other over. That integration is what separates Myrath from bands that merely add an ethnic instrument as decoration. On the mature-phase records — Legacy (2016), Shehili (2019), Karma (2024) — the traditional elements are part of the rhythmic structure, not an overlay. Myrath left Tunisia and reached the big European festivals without giving up that identity. Few bands from outside metal's traditional circuit have managed it.
