Richard Willemse — Dutch musician — works in the metal circuit of the Netherlands. The Dutch scene has a distinguishing trait: density. In a small territory, with public infrastructure supporting music and accessible schools, a network formed in which musicians, studios, producers and venues are all a few hours from one another. That changes how a career works in practice. The most visible consequence is circulation. Dutch players often take part in several projects at once, and band line-ups recompose with musicians who already know each other from other contexts. It is not a large scene in absolute numbers, but it is extremely interconnected. That arrangement produced results out of proportion to the country's size. European symphonic metal — Within Temptation, Epica, After Forever, Delain — emerged almost entirely from within that network, formed by people who knew one another before any of those bands existed.
