Scott Rockenfield — born in the United States on 15 June 1963 — was Queensrÿche's founding drummer, present from 1982 until the mid-2010s. His function in the band is the least noticed and the most determining of the result. Queensrÿche's repertoire does not work through speed: the tracks change tempo, alternate sections of tension with almost acoustic passages, and the drums must mark those transitions without breaking the narrative continuity. On Operation: Mindcrime (1988), a record built as a continuous story, it is the drums that signal the move from one scene to the next. His style combines technical precision with an unusual use of percussion and effects, something that came from his interest in composing for film — a territory in which he worked outside the band. He stepped away in 2017, initially for family reasons, and the absence became permanent amid litigation between members. It is one more piece in the troubled corporate history of a band that went through two legal ruptures in two decades.
