Stephen van Haestregt was Within Temptation's drummer between 2002 and 2010, a period covering the band's phase of greatest international prominence. Born in the Netherlands in 1972, he recorded The Silent Force (2004) and The Heart of Everything (2007), the albums that established the group as a reference point in symphonic metal and took it to arena audiences across Europe. His function in that context is support amid a densely occupied arrangement. With orchestra, choirs, guitars and lead voice contesting the spectrum, the drums have to mark firmly and clearly without filling — keeping fills short and putting definition above speed. It is work that rarely draws attention and is the condition for the orchestral layers to hold above it. He left the band in 2010, closing the line-up that performed the group's best-known repertoire.
