Darkthrone

Darkthrone is a Norwegian black metal band formed in late 1986 in Kolbotn. Originally playing death metal, the band released Soulside Journey (1991), its only death metal record. The band then abruptly pivoted to raw, lo-fi black metal, producing a trilogy of landmark albums: A Blaze in the Northern Sky (1992), Under a Funeral Moon (1993), and Transilvanian Hunger (1994) — the "Unholy Trinity." Since 1993, Darkthrone has continued as the duo of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, evolving through Panzerfaust (1995), The Cult Is Alive (2006), and a doom-tinged style from Old Star (2019) onward. Famous for its anti-modern stance — no live shows since 1996, no touring, minimal media presence — Darkthrone remains one of the most influential and respected bands in extreme metal, active into the 2020s.
