Shaman is a Brazilian heavy metal band formed in 2000 by Andre Matos (vocals), Hugo Mariutti (guitar), Luís Mariutti (bass) and Ricardo Confessori (drums), after all four musicians left Angra. The group quickly earned international recognition for combining power metal, progressive metal and elements of Brazilian and classical music. Their debut album, Ritual (2002), became one of the most important records in Brazilian metal, driven by songs such as "Fairy Tale", "For Tomorrow" and "Carry On" (re-recorded live at later performances). In 2005 the band released Reason, exploring a more modern and varied sound. After a period of hiatus, Shaman returned to the stage in different lineups over the course of the 2010s. The band is remembered for the high technical quality of its members, for its elaborate compositions and for Andre Matos' striking vocal interpretation. Even after his death in 2019, Shaman remains one of the most influential bands in the history of Brazilian heavy metal, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire musicians and fans around the world.
