Edguy is a German power metal band formed in 1992 in Fulda by four schoolmates — vocalist Tobias Sammet, guitarists Jens Ludwig and Dirk Sauer, and drummer Dominik Storch. After self-releasing Savage Poetry (1995), they signed with AFM Records; Kingdom of Madness (1997) is usually treated as the official debut. Tobias Sammet has always been the band's centre of gravity: singer, keyboardist, principal songwriter, and the source of the tongue-in-cheek humour that distinguished Edguy from more solemn German power metal. Vain Glory Opera (1998) and Theater of Salvation (1999) established the classic sound. Mandrake (2001) brought their first commercial breakthrough. Hellfire Club (2004) began a gradual shift toward hard rock, continued on Rocket Ride (2006) and Tinnitus Sanctus (2008). Age of the Joker (2011) and Space Police (2014) reached their highest chart positions. In parallel, Sammet built Avantasia, which steadily consumed more of his creative time. Edguy's last release was Monuments (2017); in March 2020 Sammet confirmed an open-ended hiatus without announcing a formal breakup.
