Before Brazilian power metal conquered international festivals, foreign contracts and global respect, a group of teenagers from São Paulo was already playing as if the future of the genre depended on them. Formed in 1985 by Andre Matos, Pit Passarell, Yves Passarell, Felipe Machado and Cássio Audi, Viper emerged carrying the urgency of youth and the ambition of people who refused to accept the limits of the domestic market. The first show took place at Lira Paulistana, in São Paulo. Two years later, *Soldiers of Sunrise* would introduce Brazil to a band still raw, but equipped with technique, speed and a conviction uncommon in musicians so young. With *Theatre of Fate*, in 1989, Viper stopped being merely a promise. The fusion of heavy metal, classical music, epic melodies and Andre Matos' extraordinary voice produced a record that crossed borders when that still seemed improbable for a Brazilian band. "Living for the Night", "A Cry from the Edge", "Prelude to Oblivion" and "Moonlight" revealed a lineup capable of combining virtuosity and emotion without turning the songs into academic exercises. The album earned releases in Japan, Europe and the United States, becoming one of the cornerstones of melodic metal made in the country. Andre Matos' departure could have ended the story. Instead, it forced Viper to shed its skin. Pit Passarell took over the vocals, Renato Graccia arrived on drums, and *Evolution*, recorded in Germany, presented a heavier, more direct and more aggressive band. The change was not cosmetic. It was practically a second debut. The group opened for Black Sabbath and Metallica, toured Europe and Japan, and captured its own intensity on *Maniacs in Japan*. Few Brazilian bands of that period managed to cross such different markets without entirely losing their identity along the way. On *Coma Rage*, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Bill Metoyer, Viper incorporated punk and hardcore elements, hardening their language once again. The performance at Monsters of Rock, alongside Kiss, Black Sabbath, Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies, confirmed their position among the great names of Brazilian metal. *Tem Pra Todo Mundo*, sung in Portuguese and aimed at a different sound, divided the fans and showed that the band never had any particular talent for standing still. Not every experiment worked with the same force, but predictability was never Viper's problem. Later reunions brought Andre Matos back to the repertoire of the first two albums and took the group to Rock in Rio in 2013. After his death in 2019, Viper also came to carry the weight of preserving a body of work that helped reveal one of the greatest voices in Brazilian music. In 2023, *Timeless* marked their return to the studio with Leandro Caçoilo on vocals, showing the band still had new material to defend. The death of Pit Passarell, in September 2024, took from the group its bassist, singer, songwriter and one of its main creative axes. Viper was not merely a precursor to Angra, nor a footnote in Andre Matos' trajectory. That reading is convenient, lazy and historically unjust. The band helped prove that Brazilian heavy metal could be technically sophisticated, internationally competitive and artistically restless. Between radical changes, irreparable losses and records that crossed generations, Viper achieved something no marketing strategy can manufacture: historical relevance. When Brazilian metal was still looking for a way out into the world, they were already on the other side of the door.
